At Dental on Cambridge we know only too well the disruption to life jaw pain can cause. Jaw pain unrelated to the teeth in the jaw joint area may be due to a common condition known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD). This disorder can have a debilitating effect on quality of life, with many sufferers needing a multidisciplinary approach to assist with management of this disorder.

It is important that TMD is treated in the acute phase, within a few weeks of the onset of symptoms for best results from treatment. Symptoms include pain in and surrounding the jaw joint (TMJ) area, this is the area in front of your ear where the lower jaw joins to the skull, discomfort on opening and moving the jaw from side to side, discomfort eating hard or chewy foods, discomfort yawning or after prolonged talking.

We utilise a suite of treatment options starting with targeted physiotherapy treatments, through to dental occlusal splint therapy and in many cases therapeutic muscle relaxant medications such as Botox and Dysport. In rare cases referral may be required for surgical assessment.  All our treatment is evidence based and utilises Alex’s 20 years of physiotherapy and dental experience. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms Alex would be more than happy to meet with you and discuss your treatment options.
